Probability is one of the chapters in the JEE Mathematics syllabus, i.e., in the first phase (JEE Main) of IIT JEE. It is quite a tricky chapter, yet essential in JEE Mathematics since it is one of the easy-scoring topics, where questions can be solved using simple tricks. We can expect at least 2 to 3 questions from probability in the JEE Main Mathematics section. That means probability bears a total of about eight marks. Thus, we can say that the weightage of this chapter in the JEE Main Maths section is 2-3%. Hence, JEE aspirants must focus on probability during the preparation since it is a scoring chapter.

Probability is a trendy topic in the Mathematics syllabus of the IIT JEE. It is not considered a very simple topic, but it is essential to master the concept to stay competitive in IIT JEE. The majority of the students find it challenging to grasp this topic because their basics for this topic need to be stronger. In this chapter, students must study the methods of computing the probability of types of events, whether complex or easy. Students should comprehend the tools used for this purpose. In an attempt to learn the chapter quickly, comprehensively and clearly understandable, students are advised to go through the many illustrations and problems selected and solved from the previous years’ JEE question papers.

A sufficient number of relevant examples fully cover every sub-topic in probability. The students should note that to understand the in-depth topics of this chapter, the command of permutation and combination is necessary to score good marks in JEE Main. Thus, one should focus on studying the concepts from the JEE syllabus from a fundamental level to JEE level and understand how to solve numericals. Now, the question is how to start understanding probability. Students must begin with the definition and meaning of probability and learn all related terms and their usage. Then, check for real-life examples of probability and, when we use probability, how to define events, experiments, outcomes, etc.

Probability is a concept which is not too easy and too hard to learn. If we understand the applications of probability and how to use probability in different situations, we can quickly solve any probability problems in JEE question papers. Once students are thorough with the basic terms related to probability and how to calculate the probability of a simple event, they can start looking into advanced topics such as probability distribution. This way, students can improve their knowledge of probability and cover all the chapters from the JEE syllabus.

Apart from studying the topics and subtopics from the chapter probability, it is also necessary to make important notes and list essential formulas for students who are preparing for JEE. This will help them to revise the concept quickly in the last days of preparation or before the exam day. Also, solve problems from the JEE previous years’ question papers to understand the types of questions that appeared in the actual exam and the difficulty level for the same. This way, students can learn the probability for JEE level and score full marks from the questions asked in this chapter.
